No trip to Lapland would be complete without a visit to a reindeer farm and an opportunity to meet some of Lapland’s most famous inhabitants. Indeed, there are even more reindeer than people in Finnish Lapland. The traditional village of Torassieppi is over 150 years old with buildings dating from the 19th Century. Unlike the majority of buildings in the area, Torassieppi did not burn down during the 2nd World War. Reindeer husbandry has been practiced here for over 100 years and here you can learn about this way of life and how the people used to live and work in the old times.

A photo exhibition from a time when reindeer were used as the main mode of transportation will give you an introduction to Lappish heritage and a slide show in the reindeer museum will show you “a year in the life of a reindeer”. We will also visit the reindeers in the coral and enjoy some Lappish soup in a wooden kota.

Today, we take a drive along the Maisematie, the scenic road that connects Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi. The road travels along the west side of Ylläs fell rising to 400 metres affording some stunning views. We continue to the small village of Kaukonen where the Särestöniemi Museum displays the work and working environment of Reidar Särestöniemi (1925-1981), one of Finland’s best known artists and the most remarkable Lappish artist of his time.
Apart from his years of study, Reidar Särestöneimi spent all his life at the family farm in Kaukonen.

The Lappish nature and the local people with their beliefs and stories strongly influenced Särestöniemi’s work. Peatlands and fells, willow grouse, lynx and reindeer are frequently used motifs which combine with the bold colours that play a prominent and notable part of his work. The museum comprises several buildings including the family farm, Reidar Särestöniemi’s studio and gallery, and a cafe.

attraction.gif free.gif Sightseeing trip to Pakasaivo

pakasaivo.jpg
A sightseeing trip by bus to Pakasaivo, a deep, dark, seemingly bottomless lake set in a gorge, known locally as “Hell of Lapland”! The water on the surface and the bottom of the lake never mix and although the lake’s depth is unknown it is believed to be at least 90 metres.
Pakasaivo has a history of once being an ancient Sami worship place. People would gather here and sacrifice antlers, fish and reindeer for their gods. Some even believed the devil himself lived in the lake and if they wanted him to be

in a good mood, sacrifices would have to be made. Wander around the scenic lake area and grill sausages over the campfire with your guide.
